The White Flag

The reason government should not be trusted with extraordinary power is because it is specific individuals who receive that power. And as history has shown, or, as our current administration is behaving, individuals with power don’t necessarily use it in the ideal manner that society expects. Instead they, like any one else is prone to do, use their influence to accomplish goals they find to be imperatives, based on their own sentiments. That is how a good man finds justice in the expediency of torture, or a good man fights against the rights of others, like people belonging to the GLBT community.

In a perfect world the government would need no restrictions because it would only use its power for justice. But, I believe it’s no surprise to anyone that we do not live in a perfect world. Most men are slaves to their desires, and are no more to blame for that than cattle are to blame for defying their captor.

I believe all men intend to cause more good than harm; a good example is the Christian who tells others they are doomed to Hell. It may sound wicked, but they only do this with the intent to save others from eternal damnation; this is an honest agenda, however these particular people are obviously confused. Although “fanatics” are not the majority, they do tend to be the active majority; these are the individuals most likely to hold political rallies, and vote. Clearly, getting excited and motivated about imposing “truth” on others is within this type of person’s nature.

So, it is easy to see that it is of a person’s nature to be compelled to do things based on what they know to be true, and if they are the type of person who likes to force others to abide by their will. Then it is also clear that this type of person would want to work in a position of power in the government. In fact, to say a person who enjoys power would seek a career where they would be able to project their influence is no different than assuming a person with a deep compassion for humanity would be likely to secure a career in which they could help people.

Those who wrote the constitution knew that no man could be trusted with unlimited power, nor should anyone be trusted with that magnitude of power. In the United States each person has unalienable rights, that not even they themselves are allowed to voluntarily forfeit. This measure is not to make it more complicated for law enforcement to capture criminals. Instead, we have unalienable rights to protect innocent people from the government when it—as it so often does—over steps its boundaries to protect the well being of society. Rule of law must apply to both citizens and politicians for a civil society to properly function.
